On Thursday the 17th of September DIGSUM will host a seminar as part of the new seminar series celebrating a decade of interdisciplinary digital scholarship at Umeå University. Throughout the semester, DIGSUM will host monthly seminars featuring leading researchers, emerging scholars, and invited speakers working at the intersection of digital technology and society. In this seminar Vihang Jumle, University of Bern, will talk about “Racializing Muslims: A case study of riots in Sweden in August 2020”.
Abstract
This talk focuses on ongoing studies of stigmatization of Muslims through the lens of racialization. Critical scholars over the past decade have challenged existing concepts such as Islamophobia by seeing them as analytically narrow and instead contending that concepts such as racialization offers better frameworks to capture the fuller range of discrimination that Muslims face in public life. By analyzing over thirty thousand tweets made by Indian Twitterati in the context of riots that occurred in Sweden in August 2020, we describe how racialization unfolds through the association of Muslims with violence. This study, therefore, provides key empirical evidence that supports the proposition that racialization can occur on lines of religion.
Vihang Jumle is a research associate at the Institute of Communication and Media Studies, University of Bern. He graduated with a master's in public policy from the Hertie School, Germany (2023) and a bachelor's in information technology from Mumbai University, India (2019). Vihang works within a critical realist paradigm to understand what technology does to our societies. He is currently researching how digital technologies and media alter national socio-cultural knowledge hierarchies using both quantitative and qualitative methods.
