On Thursday the 10th of September DIGSUM will host a seminar as part of the new seminar series celebrating a decade of interdisciplinary digital scholarship at Umeå University. Throughout the semester, DIGSUM will host monthly seminars featuring leading researchers, emerging scholars, and invited speakers working at the intersection of digital technology and society. In this seminar Paul Dodemaide, Victoria University, will talk about “Therapeutic and nontherapeutic uses of social media for young adults”.
Abstract
The social work profession must better understand and adapt to the changing psychosocial environment, and explore how to integrate evolving technology into practice, while acknowledging the potential therapeutic and nontherapeutic uses of social media. So, what are the therapeutic and nontherapeutic uses of social media for young adults, and how do these inform social workers and mental health clinicians working with young adults and their families?
This presentation will focus on the process, findings and recommendations crafted through my PhD thesis with publication, wherein I sought to answer this, adopting a methodological pluralist approach and iterative design. Initially a scoping review was completed, informing the design of an online survey of young adults, in turn informing the design of an eDelphi study involving Australian social workers and students as stakeholders with expertise.
Paul Dodemaide is a non-indigenous social worker and academic living on stolen land in so called Australia, he continues to pursue his own family history and decolonial process as a part of his own continued learning. His PhD has been focussed on the therapeutic opportunities of social media for young adults, and explored the potential future of continued integration of digital tools and technology into the social work practice. His further expertise and interest include clinical practice and practice-based research in health settings.
