On Thursday the 15th of October DIGSUM will host a seminar as part of the new seminar series celebrating a decade of interdisciplinary digital scholarship at Umeå University. Throughout the semester, DIGSUM will host monthly seminars featuring leading researchers, emerging scholars, and invited speakers working at the intersection of digital technology and society. In this seminar Päivi Rasi-Heikkinen, University of Lapland, Finland, will talk about “Towards a novel framework for robot literacy among adults”.
Abstract
Due to ongoing robotisation, adults increasingly encounter physical robots in their professional and personal lives, particularly in countries with high levels of robot adoption. It is therefore important that adults possess robot literacy, which Rasi-Heikkinen and her research team presently define through seven skill dimensions: (1) awareness of robots; (2) interaction with robots; (3) understanding and evaluating information provided by robots; (4) understanding data security and privacy issues related to robots; (5) programming robots; (6) ethical reflection; and (7) providing and receiving social support in robotics-related matters. In her presentation, Rasi-Heikkinen discusses the development of the novel robot literacy framework and presents findings from a national survey on adults’ robot literacies in Finland, operationalised on the basis of the robot literacy framework. The survey forms part of the MediaRoboLit 65+ project, funded by the Research Council of Finland (2023–2027, grant number 355063).
Päivi Rasi-Heikkinen is a Professor of Education at the University of Lapland’s Faculty of Education, Finland, and the leader of the MediaRoboLit 65+ project. Päivi is specialised in lifelong learning, older adults' digital competences, media literacies, and their training and support. Her work also focuses on digital inclusion among older adults.
